Pablo, MT–The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) Tribal Council unanimously endorsed the Climate North Star global climate rescue plan at their regular meeting on Thursday, December 11, 2025. The science-based plan, if implemented, would cause global temperatures to stop rising no later than 2035.

“We are proud to endorse a plan that offers a plausible path to stopping the relentless rise of global temperatures which is causing such chaos and suffering across the planet,” said CSKT Tribal Council Vice Chairman Tom McDonald. “We have a long memory of living in harmony with this beautiful and bountiful planet and are distressed to see the harm that human caused climate change is causing our beloved tribal lands and to lands and people beyond. We hope Climate North Star gains the widest possible support.”

“We are grateful for the crucial support the CSKT Tribal Council offered with their endorsement of Climate North Star. Climate North Star rejects the politically calculated 1.5 Celsius above pre-industrial levels temperature target of the Paris climate agreement,” said Climate North Star founder and project director David Merrill. “That is not a safe long-term temperature. A safe long-term temperature is 0.5 Celsius above pre-industrial levels, last experienced on Earth in 1985. Climate North Star is designed to prevent the collapse of the ice sheets on Antarctica and Greenland which would flood coastal cities worldwide, likely causing the collapse of the global economy and society. The last time global temperatures were this high, sea levels were 20-30 feet higher than today so we are in a race against time that we dare not lose. It is essential that the well-being of fossil fuel workers be centered as we move through the energy transition proposed in Climate North Star.”

“By blending climate science and indigenous science and wisdom,” says CSKT Climate Coordinator and Climate North Star board member Mike Durglo, “Climate North Star offers inspiration and time-bound guidance to avert a climate catastrophe before it is too late. We urge indigenous and non-indigenous peoples to rally around this maximum speed plan which offers a unique path to preserving a livable planet for all of our children.”
